Man Arrested at Bluewater Bridge with 15 year old Runaway
December 17 / 2015

The Times Herald
Beth LeBlanc

A 49-year-old Imlay City man is facing human trafficking charges after being arrested at the Blue Water Bridge with a 15-year-old Detroit runaway.

F/Lt. Shannon Sims, post commander for the Michigan State Police Lapeer Post, said Roger Reid, a registered sex offender, was arrested at the bridge Dec. 13.

Sims said investigators believe Reid crossed the bridge to Canada by accident.

Canadian customs officials then turned Reid’s car around, and he was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

CBP contacted Michigan State Police to report a suspicious incident involving a registered sex offender and minor.

When troopers arrived at the bridge, the girl said she was 18 and met Reid online. Troopers eventually determined she was 15 and had run away from Detroit.

Sims said investigators believe the girl had been living with Reid for about a month before his arrest.

Reid was arrested and arraigned on six counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, controlled substance provided to a minor, child abuse commercial activity, child accosting for immoral purpose and harboring a runaway, according a statement from state police.

Reid’s bond was set at $250,000. He remains in custody.

The girl has been returned to her family in Detroit.

Reid is scheduled to appear in Lapeer County District Court Dec. 28.

According to the Michigan Sex Offender Registry, Reid was convicted in 2002 of attempted second degree criminal sexual conduct with a person under 13.
